The kitchen is a place where family and friends love to get together, but also setting a fire which is more than any room at home.
Cooking is the number one cause of home fires in the country and during the holidays, and the American Red Cross wants everyone to be aware of the steps that they have to in order to avoid the fire while cooking.
Start by not wearing clothes loose or dangling sleeves while cooking. Never leave cooking food unattended-stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If one should leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. Other security measures include:
-Check the food on a regular basis while cooking and stay at home while cooking. Use a timer to remind the stove or oven.
-Keeping children away from cooking areas. Enforce “free zone” and make them remain at least three feet away from the stove.
